Community

Durham, also known as the City of Medicine, is most well known for being home to Duke University and one of the vertices of Research Triangle Park, connecting Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. There are many unique aspects that set our city apart and give us our own distinct energy that is so prevalent. We are made up of a strong, proud community offering a tremendous amount of culture, architecture, and arts. Durham was placed fifth on U.S. News & World Report's Best Places to Live in 2009, praising our city's rebirth as a medical and tech hub for its strong performance, stating: “Once a tobacco town, Durham, N.C., has evolved into a world-class center of all things advanced.” But 'Durhamites' already knew we had a lot to offer, from our thriving biotech and pharmaceutical industries, our local arts festivals and the college sports that the three local universities (Duke, UNC and N.C.State) provide. Despite the nation's economic downturn, the former tobacco capital has been experiencing a notable resurgence of new businesses and prosperity that have given us a strong renewed spirit.  It is truly special to be a part of a city experiencing rapid growth that can renew and restore while keeping it's historic architecture and urban appeal.

If you or your organization would like to post your event here, email Susan at susan@susanrichter.com with the Name, Location and Description and she will post it on the Community page. Although most of this page gives reference to Durham, we love travelling to other parts of the Triangle too!

Places To Go

Brightleaf Square

The side of a nearby brick building still reads Liggett & Myers- just a hint at the rich past historic Brightleaf Square has seen. One of Durham's earliest renovation projects, Brightleaf is an outdoor shopping area with a historic warehouse feel and offers over a dozen upscale restaurants and popular shopping that ranges from music and jewlery, to antiques and vintage clothing. The exposed brick, the heart pine floors, and the brick pedestrian courtyard all come together to make this a unique experience you will remember. The Summer Concert Series runs during the warmer months, featring an outdoor band on Friday evenings that livens up the mood if you choose to dine in the outdoor seating area underneath the lights.

Durham Bulls Athletic Park

A Bulls game is a must for all families and visitors in our area! The new and improved stadium opened in 1998, the year the Bulls began playing in the Triple-A International League. The team became internationally famous in 1988, when the movie Bull Durham was filmed in the former stadium, staring Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins. The ballpark is clean with roomy seats, and reflects historic downtown Durham architecture. Complete with fireworks, a free playground for kids under 5, a climbing wall, wiffleball station, and in between innings entertainment for the younger crowd, a Bulls game can work well as a date night or an affordable family outing.

Sarah P. Duke Gardens

Called "the crown jewel of Duke University", the Duke Gardens is where to go when you have friends or family in town to entertain, you have a moment alone with your lover, or just a day stretched ahead of you with ansty kids. This beautiful public garden is filled with shady paths to stroll, landscaped lawns to throw a frisbee or stretch out on, huge Magnolia trees to picnic underneath, and two large ponds filled with water lillies that are home to ducks and other creatures. It is truly so beautiful, wedding parties can be regularly seen here taking pictures.

American Tobacco

Located right next to the Durham Ballpark lies the American Tobacco Campus. A registered historic sight, this beauty was created out of the massive renovation that transformed Durham's empty tobacco warehouses into arguably one of downtown Durham's best places to spend a night out. Sponsored by North Carolina Public Radio, WUNC, the Music on the Lawn Concert Series is a weekly outdoor concert featuring bluegrass, folk and blues artists in a family-friendly atmosphere. Kids jump accross the large stones jutting out of "Ol' Bull River", a man made creek that runs through the center of campus, and frolick on the grassy lawn in front of a large brick pavillion that serves as the stage underneath Durham's Lucky Strike water tower. If you aren't in the mood to picnic, five popular restaurants with abundant outdoor seating are surrounding: Tyler’s Taproom, Café Zen, Mellow Mushroom, Saladelia, and Cuban Revolution.

Durham Farmers Market

Open Saturdays 8am to noon, the Durham Farmers Market features live music, locally grown vegetables, meats, cheeses, eggs and a wide variety of cut flowers, potted plants, medicinal herbs and handmade crafts. My personal favorite is the fresh goat cheese! The Pavilion at Durham Central Park is the dedicated space for the Farmers Market, a great location with a mix of shade and sundrenched grassy areas. You are sure to run into friends while mosying through the 50+ vendors, making this is the ideal spot to start your Saturday with the dog in tow.

Carolina Inn (Chapel Hill)

When the weather is warm and the work week is over, singles, families, the young and old gather together on the shady front lawn of one of Chapel Hill's historic hotels. Fridays on the Front Porch is a free music series starting at 5 p.m. and running from April through September, and you had better arrive early because it does draw a crowd! A buffet offers beer, wine, cocktails and good southern food, so come hungry and ready to relax with friends while the little ones dance and listen to the bluegrassy sounds of the Big Fat Gap.

Carolina Theatre

Where else can you enjoy a cold beer while watching a thought provoking independent film in a beautifully restored historic theatre dating back to 1925? Offering vibrant plays, live musical performances and rare foreign films as well, the Carolina Theatre sits in the center of downtown Durham and is the perfect spot to bring your date after dinner. Their mission statement is to "contribute to the cultural and economic vitality of downtown Durham" and I think they have succeeded.

NC Museum of Life & Science

Free on Wednesday afternoons for Durham residents, the award-winning Museum of Life and Science is filled with hundreds of cool interactive exhibits that both adults and children will enjoy discovering. This includes one of the larger butterfly conservatories in the country, wolves, lemurs and bears, a railroad with cars you can actually ride on, a lush 2 acre natural wetland habitat, a radio controlled sailboat pond, and a large outdoor park filled with chimes and sprinklers for the younger kids to strip down and enjoy on hot summer days.

Weaver Street Market (Carrboro)

Far from your regular supermarket, Weaver Street Market is a community owned grocery store specializing in local, seasonal and market made products and is one of the most popular destinations of Carrboro, a mere 15 minutes from Durham.  It is arguable which is the hotter event, their Thursday After Hours or Sunday Jazz Brunch. both drawing the masses from Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh together underneath mature shady oak trees for live music, picnic food and lots of fun. Besides the music, entertainment can include hula hoopers, crafts, and jugglers to name a few- its all together a very lively event. Weaver Street Market has truly become part of the community and its popularity and success speak for itself.

Durham Performing Arts Center

With its multi million dollar renovation complete in 2008, the DPAC has brought world class performers to the Bull City. Featuring over 2,700 seats, the DPAC hosts Broadway shows, concerts, big name comedians, and award winning dances- such as The American Dance Festival, a six and a half week series of performances by major establish companies from June through August, a festival not to miss! Praised for its extraordinary artichtecture, the beauty of the center is especially stunning at night, when its 3 glass levels spill out light into the surrounding Tobacco Campus and the night sky.

Eno River State Park

If you are the outdoorsy type, then you will no doubt be interested in the 3,700 protected areas of wood sitting along the Eno River, offering hiking, swimming, canoeing, camping, fishing or picnicing. This is a popular place to be in the dog days of summer, yet it is not rare to find people out for a brisk winter stroll along the edges of the river as well. The Festival on the Eno is not to be missed, attracting over 30,000 people over the 4th of July for a 3 day weekend full of live music, crafts and food all on the river banks.
